Church History
Our Church is one of
the oldest in Ann Arbor, and the second oldest Black Church in Michigan. It
dates back to 1865, the year a few baptized believers were called together
and organized under our present name. Recently found records date our Church
back to 1859 and trace the history to Canada where it was reported that we
joined the Amherstburg Regular Missionary Baptist Association of Ontario as
a new Church. Meanwhile, about eighteen ministers have served this
well-established congregation and through gradual growth we have developed
Second Baptist into one of the most prominent religious institutions in the
area. Three church buildings have served the needs of our congregation
for these 122 to 128 years. Our present edifice was built in 1980. God
has set us in this place and we will go
where the Holy Spirit leads us to go.

Our Beliefs
We believe in the
divine authority of the Bible, in the One God who exists eternally in three
persons, and who was incarnated in Jesus Christ. We believe in God the
Creator who made man in His own image, and that man fell into sin and is
therefore under condemnation. We believe that through Jesus Christ, God
made a way for the salvation of man, and anyone who accepts Him is born
again into a new life. We believe in baptism by immersion by which we
relive the death, burial and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, a symbol
of our Faith. We believe in the ministry of the Holy Spirit working in us
to fulfill the mission of Christ in the Church and the world. We believe in
the imminent return of our Lord and Savior, to be greeted by all who are
prepared for the coming of the Kingdom of God.

Our Church Family
Members of this
Church are a family, made up of baptized believers in the Lord Jesus
Christ. All are bound together by ties of love for God and each other.
Within the congregation there is mutual support and caring for one another,
and enough staff to provide extended family service to others. The Church
Family gets this spirit and helping strength from the Lord, and is proud to
share it with whomever will come. If you need a church family, there is a
place for you here.
